Serial NOR flash is the default code-storage memory in almost every embedded design — and the three names you will meet again and again are W25Q, MX25 and GD25. They are pin-compatible in most cases, but they are not identical. This guide explains how to choose between them and how to source them without counterfeits or allocation surprises.
| Family | Vendor | Common parts | Interface | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| W25Q | Winbond | W25Q64JVSSIQ, W25Q128JVSIQ | SPI / QSPI | Market standard, huge availability |
| MX25 | Macronix | MX25L6433F, MX25L12835F | SPI / QSPI | Long-standing, widely designed-in |
| GD25 | GigaDevice | GD25Q64E, GD25Q128E | SPI / QSPI | Cost-competitive, often drop-in compatible |
Density: 8 Mb (1 MB) to 1 Gb (128 MB). Most firmware uses 64 Mb–128 Mb (8–16 MB).
Interface & speed: standard SPI vs Quad SPI (QSPI); check the max clock (typically 104–133 MHz).
Package: SO-8 (208 mil) is the most common; WSON/USON for space-critical designs.
Voltage: 1.8 V vs 3.0 V families — do not mix them.
Compatibility: W25Q, MX25 and GD25 are usually command-compatible, so they can often be swapped with a firmware ID check.
Maximum availability / ecosystem → W25Q (the safe default)
Existing design already using Macronix → stay with MX25
Cost-optimized new design → GD25, verify timing and ID handling first
Serial flash is a high-volume, frequently counterfeited category. Protect your production by:
Buying from a supplier who can trace the date code and lot
Requesting samples for ID/read-write verification before full volume
Confirming the exact suffix (e.g. W25Q128JVSIQ vs W25Q128JVSIM) — package and temperature grade differ
Homehta Technology stocks W25Q, MX25 and GD25 serial NOR flash across densities and packages, with genuine sourcing and fast worldwide shipping for engineering samples and volume orders.
Are W25Q128JVSIQ and GD25Q128E interchangeable? They are command-compatible in most designs, but always verify the JEDEC ID and timing with a sample before committing to volume.
What does the "Q" mean? It indicates Quad SPI capability, allowing faster read/write than standard SPI.
